Yahoo! Launches New Search Service

As of February 5th, all Overture/Yahoo! accounts will be forced to update to the new Panama system. Similar to Google’s AdWords, it rewards based on history rather than the old pure auction method used in the past. This will force people to reevaluate their ads and write better….or sink. Change may be awful, but this was a move that was long overdue for Yahoo! in order to remain competitive.

According to this forum at Webmaster World, Yahoo will offer a one time bulk upload of your keywords to your ad campaign. Apparently method of attracting more customers to their new Panama update, it’s one that’s bound to work. It’s very simple to take your Google or MSN words, export them and send them off to Yahoo. You just need to work a little spreadsheet magic.

Wikipedia Links are Now NOFOLLOW

Any links you have in Wikipedia are now set to NO FOLLOW. This basically instructs the search engines not to consider this as an outgoing link and strips away any benefits from having a link in Wikipedia. They claim this is to help eliminate spam, but there are doubts this will help. Let’s face it, a spammer will still place links there even if they only get a few clicks from people reading the article. They are use to dealing with low odds.

Wize Investment

Wize has received $4 million dollars in investment funds. Wize is a search tool that offers consumer reviews for online and offline stores. The rating system is similar to Google’s Page Rank and users can post reviews. There are also professional reviews (now there’s a job for you…play with stuff and write about it) and product comparisons. With the first round of major funding secured, here’s a company to watch.

MySpace Protection ..But Where Are The Parents?

MySpace is instituting a number of items designed to help protect under 18 users of MySpace. This is after parents have sued them because their under age daughters were targets of preditors. The question that should be raised is where are the parents? Shouldn’t they be involved in what their children do online? Shouldn’t they have instructed their children in proper online usage? With all the monitoring and safety tools available, where was their action to protect their children? I do think MySpace should do what is reasonable to protect their users, but there is no protection against stupidity. If you are talking online and a stranger wants to meet you in person, shouldn’t that send off alarms? Like don’t meet them alone in a private place? I don’t know all the details, but it is questions like these that never seem to be answered or asked by articles like this one….

It Can Happen To Anyone….Even Google

Google forgot to renew a domain name. It’s funny when it happens to someone like Google. Not funny when it’s your site. For a while, Google Germany was offline due to an expired domain name. Not to panic…they are back in business.

You Can Submit…You Will Submit

DMOZ is open for submissions again. I have yet to test it to see if it’s really true, but reports state it is open.

ODP – Open Directory Project

Does this mean that DMOZ will resurrect from the ashes of it’s former self? Doubt it. Once one of the most important places to be listed, corruption in the system has made it a less desirable listing service with it’s data being suspect.
