PDF Docs to Show Yahoo! Ads

Personally I’m not all to fired up about this one which is why I’m one day late posting it here. I’m sick and tired of being slammed constantly with ads everywhere I turn. It’s no wonder people are ignoring anything that even remotely looks like an ad. Sometimes valuable content is ignored because we’ve been trained to ignore certain types of items. Well, ad to the list because Yahoo! has a program where publishers can attach ads to PDF documents. Now I don’t mind it if it’s a valuable document that I received for free, but this is going to mean loads of junk documents being pushed on us just so some loser can make an extra $20 a year. Sigh.

Google Diggs You

Google is experimenting with a new addition to their personalized search. A temporary experiment will allow you to hide or move certain search results. Certain to eventually be a new feature, this data will certainly help Google determine relevant content for search phrases based on the clicks of people around the globe. Very smart of Google. Free labor from millions of surfers. Feeling a bit used? Just remember that if you are logged in to your Google account, your search results most likely appear differently than if you weren’t logged in. This continues to muddy the waters for search marketing, but I call it job security.

Google’s Next Data Aquisition? Your Hard Drive.

The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Google plans to allow you to upload and share your documents with the world. Yes, upload your entire hard drive and access it from anywhere. Security issues, copyright issues, and a whole host of other issues send up loads of red flags, but not to be daunted, they are proceeding. Done properly, it’s a great marketing tool for small business. For Google, it’s a great way to receive mountains of free data instead of your puny links.

Miva Merchant to be More Search Friendly

It’s been a hot topic on the Miva Merchant forums and has driven me nuts many times. People obsessed with that top ranking have been trying to tweak Miva Merchant to make it as search friendly as possible. The new version of Merchant, 5.5, will make much of this easier. The most desired feature in my book is the static home page. It’s long overdue. The other features are nice additions that will allow people to stop whining and get back to doing what is most important…..making a site that people actually want to shop at in the first place.

AOL Now Owns Yedda

AOL has purchased another company within one week timeframe. Now it’s Israeli social search Yedda. Yedda is a social search and answers service similar to Yahoo! Answers. It allows people to ask questions, matches their question to similar ones and helps them find an expert to answer the question. It’s one place where people can set themselves up as an expert in a field.

FaceBook Social Ads

Have a brand that has fans, or could have fans. Create a FaceBook ad page and make “friends” with people loyal to your brand. Yup, it costs money, but it is a great way to market to people who forgot how to have face to face conversations and now give word of mouth advertising through the social networks. MySpace is offering a similar ad program of course.
