Even 17 Experts Don’t Agree

Get 17 expert search marketing professionals together and the expected happens. No one agrees. It’s not surprising really. There is no one set formula that can be applied to every site. The list of the ten most important things is so obvious it’s not funny and yet you could even skip some of them and still rank very well. I’ll save you a lot of reading. Design for the user first and everything else will fall into place when you go to market the site. Forget the user and you’ll lose.

Exclude Sites from Displaying Your Ads

If you advertise with Google and have selected to exclude sites from displaying your ads, you may want to check your settings. You have to save the sites listing twice to have the edit take effect. (This is yet another reason why we are hired to run campaigns for people.) I’ve taken it for granted to expect things like this, but after reading this thread, I thought it good to post this tip here for those who have missed the second button.

Subdomains To Be Treated As Folders

Will Google be treating subdomains as folders? Currently you can have multiple subdomains treated as separate sites. If the new rules go into effect, Google will treat subdomains as if they were merely subfolders off your main site and limit results to only two entries per domain. There will be obvious exceptions of course, but this will mean some changes in strategy for many marketers.
If your subdomains are truly featuring unique content and you are using them properly, this shouldn’t be too much of a concern. If you are using subdomains to rule the search results for a particular phrase, you are affected. It sounds good in practice and it is in response to those trying to break the rules. After all, how many listings do you need to get people to go to your site? If you have to rule the world just to get people to visit your site, maybe your site isn’t that great?
