When Not to Be Listed
Identity theft is obviously an issue for many, however there are the fearmongers that will take advantage. The simple truth is, never give out personal information unless you really have to. Argue with people asking for it when you think it isn’t needed. Along this vein of thought is a web site where you can enter your SSN to see if it has been stolen. Alarms and bells should go off right away. Why give your personal information to an Internet startup…a company you don’t know? Just for chuckles, we searched for a few known tv stars that were given fake SS numbers. Mr. Ed, the talking horse, hasn’t had his identity stolen. Thomas Magnum, the private eye, has. Rule of thumb is don’t have thumbs. You can’t type as easily.
Moral of the story….be careful what information you enter even if it’s just to get your site listed on a web site. It may not be worth the listing.
